PRINTER CONNECTION

In my opinion printers are one of the necessary evils of computing world. Even with today's technology, these peripheral devices seem to be a constant source of frustration. Many print devices are all-in-one (printer, scanner and photocopier) machines and are reasonably priced these days and do a pretty good job considering. However, when they go wrong, it's usually when you need to print some items urgently.

Below are some of the common problems I've had the "pleasure" of dealing with over the years:

  • The printer shows as not being seen on the network by the computer - one of the most frequent issues. This is often due to incorrect drivers being installed especially after a Windows update/upgrade or a new out of the box printer setup because Windows will automatically install it's own drivers (which are not always very helpful) when it sees the printer on the network or it's connected via USB.

  • The network printer did work, but is now "greyed out" in Devices and Printers and print tasks fail - another frequent problem which can be caused because of an issue with the router. Quite often this is resolved by rebooting the router. If you have changed your router, the same problem will occur and the printer's network/Wi-Fi settings will need to be changed.

  • The printed text or image is poor, with sections missing, incorrect colours etc.. - this can be down to poor ink quality or the printer hasn't been used for a while and has dried up in the print heads, and therefore needs cleaning, which is best done through the printer's software. Also, the print heads may need aligning.

  • The paper keeps getting jammed - often happens with older printers, especially those that have had a lot of use and are just worn out. These days, printers are relatively low cost to replace, so it's generally not worth trying to repair them.

Resolving Printer Connection Issues

Although I don't generally repair printers, I do resolve printer connection issues, which can include:

  • Fault diagnostics & resolving of network/WiFi communication

  • Fixing printer & scanner driver issues

  • Connecting PCs to office scanners

  • Providing client instruction (through demonstration) on printer maintenance including print head cleaning
