COMPUTER/LAPTOP REPAIR
Computer and Laptop Repair
Before throwing your computer away because it's playing up, give me a call. There are a host of reasons why your computer may not be the machine it once was; it could either be software or hardware related for which I have great diagnostic resources. Having it repaired costs less than buying a new one and is less time consuming for you than adding all of your important software that you have spent hours installing and setting up over time. You are also reducing the carbon footprint, thus helping to conserve the planet by not buying new equipment unless there is no other choice. Below is a list of issues I deal with on a weekly basis:
Typical PC Hardware Issues
-
Power Supply Unit (PSU) failure - one of the most common hardware failures with desktop PCs and fairly straight forward to replace.
-
Hard Drive failure - another common issue - this requires the data to be recovered from the existing hard drive to a new one. On many occasion I have successfully cloned the old hard drive, which leaves everything in-tact. Where it's not possible to clone, I do a clean install of Windows plus reinstall your essential software, and I can nearly always recover the data. If I'm unable to recover the data I have a contact who can.
-
Faulty RAM - quick and easy to replace.
-
Graphics card failure - sometimes caused by overheating or just general wear and tear.
-
Motherboard and Processor replacement - less common than the above, I have replaced quite a few when economical to do so.
Typical Laptop Hardware Issues
-
Hard Drive failure - probably the most common hardware issue with laptops - due to the fact that laptops are portable and often get knocked or dropped especially when they are switched on. This can cause head crashing and other mechanical failure. The replacement is very similar to that of a desktop computer.
-
Broken or faulty screens - Symptoms can include dark blotches or even broken glass, caused by some impact; or a fuzzy or lined screen or just a black screen. I can replace your screen or back light inverter and also provide a monitor for you to use whilst your part is on order; the turn-a-round time is usually 3 to 4 days.
-
Faulty RAM - similar failure rate to that of desktop RAM.
-
Overheating - Laptops are prone to accumulating dust in the cooling system and when they do they can start to overheat and often shutdown randomly as a result. Because there isn't much space for airflow in a laptop, it needs to be fairly clean for adequate cooling. To properly clear a laptop cooling system, it has to be partly disassembled (to what extent depends on the model) in order to get to the affected parts. I've fixed many overheating laptops (see examples) including replacement of the system fan.
-
Power Loss - This can be down to a faulty charger, dead battery or a worn out Power Jack Socket. Whatever the fault, I can diagnose the cause and replace the offending culprit.
-
Broken Hinges - A couple of places vulnerable to damage are the hinges that allow the lid to be opened and closed, whether it being dropped banged or forced open. Probably the most common issue is where the brass inserts that the hinge screws thread into, have been forced out of the plastic casing. I have repaired many of these without needing new parts.
Typical Software Issues
-
Malware - including, spyware, viruses, adware, scareware and ransomware. [For further detail on malware].
-
Windows Updates - sometimes an update doesn't install properly (due to "inconsistances") and can often result in Windows Apps not working, and the infamous Windows Update loop. But not to worry, I can soon get those updates and apps running properly again.
-
Outdated, currupt or incomptible software and drivers - This can often happen after updating to a newer version of Windows. I have a great deal of experience when it comes to updating software, especially drivers.
-
System file problems and registry errors. This are quite common especially if you are frequently installing and uninstalling software. I probably fix these sorts of issues once a week on average.
